John Illingworth from Stockport arrived in Ecuador from England as captain of a frigate which
was purchased by the Chilean separatists.
As a passenger of the ship came Lord Cochrane, who also came to help in the independence from Spain. The name of the ship
was THE ROSE, later changed to ROSA DE LOS ANDES.
John Illingworth commanded the ship many years patroling the west coast of South America and fought against the Spaniards in several naval combats. He also took the
leading role during the naval siege of El Callao (Peru) one of the last ports held by the
Spanish Crown.
He was close to Simon Bolivar foremost hero of the Independence War, as many
other British officers both from the Royal Navy and Army.
In 1.989, Princess Anne visited South America to pay homage to the many British Officers who served during
said war.
John married in Guayaquil to Mercedes Decimavilla and had numerous off-spring.
As I gather information about them, I'll post links to thier bios here.
